Why Are My Lights Buzzing?

Have you ever been at home or work and suddenly noticed a faint, buzzing noise? Did

you get up and wander around, looking for the source of the buzzing, to find it coming

from one of your light fixtures? Did you wonder what is causing this buzzing and is it

dangerous?

Lights will sometimes make a buzzing sound due to electricity interacting with the

components inside the lighting system. While lights are designed to operate quietly,

small electrical or mechanical vibrations can occur, producing a faint buzzing sound.

One common cause is electromagnetic vibration in the lighting fixture or its power

components. When electricity is flowing through wires and electrical devices, it’s

constantly changing direction—typically about 60 times per second. This rapid change

can cause metal parts inside the fixture, ballast, or transformer to expand and contract

slightly, creating vibrations that produce a buzzing sound. This is most common in older lighting systems that use magnetic ballasts.

Fluorescent lights are particularly known for buzzing because of the ballast they use. A ballast regulates the electrical current that powers the light. In older fixtures, the

magnetic ballast contains coils and metal parts that can vibrate when electricity flows

through them. Over time, these parts may loosen or wear out, which can make the

buzzing louder.

But buzzing lights aren’t only found in older lighting systems. Another cause is dimmer switches. Dimmer switches control brightness by rapidly turning electricity on and off.

Some light bulbs—especially certain LED or fluorescent bulbs—are not designed to

work with all dimmers. This mismatch can cause electrical fluctuations that lead to

buzzing noises from the bulb or fixture.

Loose parts in the fixture can also create a buzzing sound. If screws, bulb bases, or

housing components are not tightly secured, even small electrical vibrations can create audible noise.

In most cases, a buzzing light is not dangerous, but it can be annoying. Replacing old

ballasts, using compatible dimmer switches, tightening fixtures, or switching to higher-quality LED bulbs can often eliminate the noise. If you have buzzing lights and cannot determine the cause, feel free to reach out. We’d be happy to help.
