O those useful extension cords!
Extension cords are wonderful things when you need power for tools or lights. Here are some things to consider for their safe and effective use.
Not all extension cords are created equal. Make sure your extension cord is rated for the intended use. Use heavy-duty construction grade cords for outdoor projects. Make sure your cord is rated for the amperage of its intended use.
Cords don't last forever. Periodically inspect your cord for signs of wear or damage. Damaged ends and worn or broken insulation are common causes of tripped breakers or worse, electric shocks to the user.
Extension cords are meant to be temporary. Cords left out in the elements will degrade more rapidly. If you're using an extension cord for months or years to power an outbuilding, heated animal waterers, outdoor lighting or whatever, increase your safety by hiring a qualified electrician to provide permanent power to your use point.
