What is Phantom Draw?

Phantom draw, also known as standby power or vampire energy, is the electricity consumed by appliances and electronic devices that remain plugged in when they are switched off or in standby mode. Many customers ask if this is wasted energy and something they should be concerned about, especially given the rising costs of the world we live in. Studies show that up to 10% of your electricity usage can be from phantom draws. There are many devices in your home that may be affecting your electrical usage. Many devices by design remain in a power state between on and off, waiting for a command or just keeping time on an internal clock. This standby state allows devices to respond quickly and perform their function on demand. For example, you will find that your television is put into rest mode between uses so that it can start quickly when you go to turn it on. Or your laptop that you leave plugged in after it is fully charged. Even though it is fully powered, the charger is still sending electricity to it. So, is it fine to leave your computer, charger cords and small appliances plugged in while not in use, or should you be manically running through your house unplugging all electronic devices until you need to use them? Remember that it is all about balance and finding what works for your budget and lifestyle. Phantom draw may sound scary, but it is not all bad. You will want to take into consideration the convenience of having devices ready to go at a moment’s notice. Many smart devices use a standby mode so they can activate their features immediately. These are things to take into consideration when deciding what to leave plugged in around your home. If you are concerned about the impact of phantom draws, then you can always unplug some of your technology or appliances when not in use. This helps lower your electricity bill and reduces your environmental impact. Consider using power-saving or energy-efficient modes when available on a device to help extend device lifespan and further save money. You may also consider using a smart power strip to conveniently control appliances. Everybody’s situation is different, so it will come down to what you are comfortable with doing.
